  • North Korea, US close to nuclear compromise: Report

INT41International/DiplomacyNorth Korea, US close to nuclear compromise: ReportSeoul, Oct 10 DPA North Korea and the United States are closer to a compromise in a last-ditch effort to salvage a nuclear disarmament deal, South Korean media said Friday. Both sides were ready for concessions in the disputed question of verification and inspection procedures of Pyongyang's nuclear facilities, the Chosun Ilbo newspapers said, quoting a high-ranking South Korean official. While the North indicated willingness to continue work to disable its nuclear weapons facilities, the United States could tentatively remove the country from its terrorism blacklist earlier than planned. A deal on this was cut during talks between North Korea and chief US nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill last week in Pyongyang, the paper said. US President George W. Bush still has to give his assent. North Korea's resuming the disabling of its nuclear facilities and the US delisting could come as early as this month, the official was quoted as saying. The communist state Thursday banned UN inspectors from accessing its nuclear facilities, after announcing in late September it would restart the Yongbyon nuclear complex, a reaction to the US refusal to remove North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. The United States had made proper verification of the North's declaration of nuclear facilities and stockpiles a prerequisite for delisting.--DPAdkg238 Words10101458

  • U.S. may remove N.Korea from state sponsors of terrorism List

Washington, Oct. 10 ANI: The United States Government has announced that it is considering removing North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.According to a Fox News report, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice could announce the decision as early as Friday. It quoted State Department sources as saying that there is a potential deal under which the U.S. would de-list North Korea. The deal would require North Korea to agree to verification protocols.Sources told FOX News that it was a direct result of North Korea's decision to allow U.S. negotiator Christopher Hill recently to inspect its nuclear facilities, including the Yongbyon plant.Removing North Korea from the terror list would be a major step in mending relations between the reclusive communist nation and the United States, though it also would come amid concerns about North Korea's weapons program. The International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA has said that in recent days North Korea appeared to have been powering up its nuclear program and testing missiles. American satellite images confirmed reports of short-range missile testing recently. But Washington said those moves would not mean the death of international efforts to persuade North Korea to recommit to an agreement that offers it diplomatic and economic concessions in exchange for nuclear disarmament. Some officials, however, have criticized the idea of de-listing North Korea. They have labeled the agreement a "get out of jail free card," as key issues, including reported assistance by North Korea to Syria in establishing a nuclear weapons program, are left unaddressed.Assistant Secretary of Verification and Compliance and Implementation Paula de Sutter told FOX News that she was disappointed that the Verification Bureau has not been included in any meetings on what Ambassador Hill brought from Pyongyang and not included in any meetings at the NSC. • Now Australian bottled beer, sunscreen for Indians Repeat for all needing

BUS4Business/InternationalNow Australian bottled beer, sunscreen for Indians Repeat for all needingBy Neena BhandariSydney, Oct 10 IANS Beer and sunscreen, two iconic products of the Australian lifestyle, are the latest to join the growing list of exports to India. The Adelaide-based family company, Hamilton Laboratories, has sent its first shipment of sunscreen and South Australia's Coopers Brewery has sent an initial shipment of 400 cases of Coopers Pale Ale, Sparkling Ale and Stout to India this October."To carve out a niche in a market where more than one billion people are exposed to the sun is an exciting development for Hamilton. The population and climate in India makes it an ideal market with incredible potential," Hamilton Chairman Richard Blake said.India already has a large number of local sunscreen manufacturers, but Hamilton is confident that their reputation for premium quality and the strong distribution network will provide the competitive edge."Our opening order for A$100,000 US$69,226 worth of our Sensitive, Optimal, Toddler and Everyday Hamilton sunscreens is a strong sign of what can be achieved in this market," Blake said."It is also a sign of the increased importance the local population is putting on sun protection and the greater awareness of skin cancer," he added.India is one of the fastest growing markets for this 75-year-old company, which exports to more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe and North America and retails its product primarily through pharmacies. The growing Indian middle class with enormous spending power is also helping another South Australian company, Coopers Brewery, to reap rich dividends. The company exports bottled beer to more than 26 countries across the world and has just secured its first export order to India.Chairman and Marketing Director Glenn Cooper said this was the first time Coopers had ever exported bottled beer into India, although it currently exports malt extract and home brew kits to the sub-continent."This contract arose from discussions with the export manager of the Indian import company D C Johar & Sons, which is based in Bangalore. They were after a premium quality beer to be stocked at numerous five star hotels throughout India and thought Coopers would be a perfect match," Cooper told IANS.India is attracting more Australian business prospects. According to Austrade research conducted with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are over 1,500 Australian businesses currently exporting to India.Australian companies like Gloria Jeans and Cookie Man are doing well in Indian retail markets through franchising arrangements.Australian exports to India increased 37 percent in 2006-07 as against 22 percent in 2005-06. In the past five years, Australian exports have increased at an average annual rate of 41 percent.India is now Australia's fourth-largest goods export market after Japan, China and South Korea. In 2006-07, India was Australia's largest market for gold, second-largest market for coal and copper ore, and third-largest market for wool.--Indo-Asian News Servicenb/arj/jg/tb516 Words10101114

  • Leona Lewis turns down 1 mn pounds because Harrods sells fur

ENT7Entertainment/Showbiz/WildLife/InternationalLeona Lewis turns down 1 mn pounds because Harrods sells furLondon, Oct 10 IANS Leona Lewis, the new singing sensation, has rejected 1 million pound offer from Harrods boss Mohammed Fayed to open this year's summer sale because the department store sells fur. A staunch vegetarian since the age of 12, the "Bleeding Love" singer stuck to her principles and turned the lucrative offer down, reports dailymail.co.uk.Lewis, who was voted Peta's World's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity, said: "I'm totally against animal cruelty. I don't have clothes, shoes or bags made from any animal products."Harrods, which declined to comment, is the only department store in Britain that continues to sell fur, and is regularly targeted by animal cruelty campaigners. Its sales are traditionally opened by an A-list female celebrity. Most of those invited have jumped at the opportunity to parade around Knightsbridge in a horse and carriage before being given a private tour of the discounted goods by Fayed himself. After Lewis turned down the offer, 52-year-old "Sex And The City" star Kim Cattrall will do the job. Last summer, Hollywood actress Sarah Michelle Geller, 31, was given the honour, while singer Lily Allen, 23, opened the winter sale last December. Other leading ladies who have cut the ribbon include Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria, Christina Aguilera and Lucy Liu. --Indo-Asian News Servicear/jg239 Words10101137
